Our Mission
The
Georgetown College Internship Program is based on the belief that students’
knowledge is expanded through practical experience. Practical experience gives
students an opportunity to assess their ability to work in a chosen career
field. The Internship Program provides students an opportunity to achieve
professional competency through problem-solving, decision-making, and relational
skills in a professional environment.
Goals
The program will . . .
- be a key part in the student’s journey of vocational discovery by fulfilling a role of preparation through practical experiences;
- provide the student an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from the classroom while gaining “hands-on” experience;
- provide the student an opportunity to try out a prospective career and determine if that chosen career field is a good fit;
- assist the student in methods of building contacts for future employment and personal growth; and
- provide the student an opportunity for self-awareness through reflection of the internship experience.
Why Internships?
A Potential Job — 33% of students who participated in internships were hired for a full-time position at the close of their internship. (National Association of Colleges and Employers, 2003)
Work Experience — 50% of new hires had previous internship experience. (National Association of Colleges and Employers, 2003)
Types of Internships:
- An Academic Internship is for credit ranging from 1 to 3 credit hours per semester and must be approved by a faculty member in the student’s major area of study, before the internship begins. Academic Internships may be paid or non-paid. They are offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Academic Internships are governed by the faculty and academic departments.
- A Career/Experience Internship is non-credit and provides a valuable learning experience that fits students’ specific vocational goals. This may be paid or non-paid and offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Students who complete an internship through Georgetown College’s Internship Program will receive a transcript notation.
